Clearing Desert and Juniper Terrain in Albuquerque
The land surrounding Albuquerque is defined by high-desert vegetation that varies dramatically with elevation and location. Properties on the West Mesa are often covered in chamisa, tumbleweeds, and scattered desert scrub, while lots in the East Mountains, Placitas, and the foothills feature dense stands of one-seed juniper, pinon pine, and native grasses. Clearing this terrain for construction requires equipment and techniques adapted to the rocky, root-laden soils typical of central New Mexico. Our crews use track-mounted mulchers, skid steers with grapple attachments, and excavators with thumb buckets to efficiently clear vegetation down to mineral soil. We work carefully around property boundaries, easements, and any trees the owner wants to preserve, marking keepers before work begins.
Lot Preparation for New Construction
Once vegetation is cleared, the lot needs to be prepared for the next phase of construction, whether that is grading, foundation excavation, or utility installation. Our lot preparation process includes removing root balls and stumps to a depth of at least twelve inches below finished grade, eliminating organic material that would decompose and cause settling under foundations or paving. We grade the cleared surface to provide equipment access and establish rough drainage patterns that prevent erosion during the construction period. For larger parcels in areas like Ventana Ranch, Volcano Cliffs, or the developing neighborhoods along Unser Boulevard, we create staged clearing plans that minimize the total disturbed area at any given time, keeping the project in compliance with the City of Albuquerque stormwater regulations.
Stump Grinding and Brush Removal
Juniper and cottonwood stumps left behind after tree removal can interfere with grading, foundation placement, and underground utility routes. We grind stumps to eight to twelve inches below grade using commercial-grade stump grinders, then backfill the holes with compacted native soil so the area is ready for the next construction phase. Brush and small-diameter vegetation are processed on-site with our track mulchers when conditions allow, reducing the material to wood chips that can be spread as erosion control mulch on undisturbed areas of the property. For lots with heavier vegetation or where on-site mulching is not practical, we load debris into roll-off containers and haul it to approved disposal facilities in the Albuquerque area.
Debris Disposal and Environmental Regulations
Proper disposal of cleared vegetation and organic debris is regulated by the City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County, and we handle every step of the process for our clients. Green waste from land clearing is transported to approved composting or landfill facilities, and we provide disposal manifests upon request for projects that require documentation. During the wildfire season, typically April through June, we follow additional precautions for mulching and chipping operations to prevent sparks in dry conditions. We also coordinate with the Bernalillo County Fire Department when clearing within the wildland-urban interface, where defensible space standards may apply. Our goal is to leave your lot clean, cleared to the correct grade, and fully compliant with local environmental and fire safety standards.
